Why the name: the corner, the squad and the set square

Escuadra means three things in Spanish, and all three are what we are building.

Olivier Aubert

A draft, for the owner’s approval. Each note is published once they have read it.

When we looked for a name, we wanted one word that a sporting director in Seville, an agent in Lyon and a scout in Leeds would all hear the same way. We found it in Spanish, where escuadra does three jobs at once.

The corner

La escuadra is the top corner of the goal. A shot that goes there is beyond the keeper’s reach, and every forward knows the word. It is the moment the work was for: the move that lands exactly where it should. In the mark, that is the ball in the top-right corner.

The squad

Una escuadra is a team, a squad. An agency is one: the agents, the scouts, the coach who looks after a few players, the person who keeps the books. A player’s move is made by that squad together, with the club and the player’s family around it. The grid our icons and loaders are drawn on is a squad of blocks, one of them with the ball.

The set square

Una escuadra is also the tool that draws a right angle. Everything in its place, so it can bear weight. That is the structure under the product: every player, request, pitch, deal, clause and euro connected to the others, with a history of who changed what. In the mark, that is the solid block.

One mark, one story

Put the three together and you have the mark: a square block gives up its corner, and the ball takes the top. The block is trust. The ball is performance. The story is told in words like these, and the mark stays plain, so it works at 16 pixels on a phone and on the side of a building.

Compa, the assistant inside, is drawn from the same two shapes: an open C that holds the same ball. There is one ball in the whole identity. When Compa is at rest, the ball sits in the mark’s corner; when you call Compa, it rolls into the C.

What this note leaves for another day

This note covers the name and the mark. The colours, the type and the motion have their own guidelines, and the trademark search is still ahead of us.
